Best Vegan Protein Powders

I am not a vegan.

I feel I should clarify that. I do eat meat and eggs, but processed dairy gives me hives. I’m actually trying to flush dairy out of my body right now, because I might have cheated this weekend (pizza…its a downfall).

Even harsher on my body than cheese or yogurt is whey protein. Before my D.O. diagnosed my dairy sensitivity, I spent years drinking protein shakes with whey protein powder. Silly girl, I couldn’t figure out why my skin was crawling, I had perpetual post-nasal drip, and my stomach and glands were swelling. I mean….why the heck did that keep happening?

No whey, lady.

I still love protein shakes, and coming from a family of former body builders, I’ve tried a lot of different kinds. Some were horrendous, hold-ya-nose-and-chug-snot-flavored-nastiness. And some I now drink every day. Your tastebuds are different than mine, so get a sample of these brands before you buy a whole tub.

1. Best Berry Flavored Protein Powder: Young Living Slique Shake. (featured in the picture at the top!)


Slique Berry Breeze is a complete meal replacement shake that provides quick, satisfying, and delicious nutrition without animal products. Formulated with Slique Essence Essential Oil Blend, Slique’s berry flavor is great on its own or mixed with almond milk, fruit, or a nut butter. Its vegan formula contains no artificial colors, flavors, preservatives or GMO ingredients. Instead, Slique Shake is naturally sweetened with Stevia, organic coconut palm sugar, wolfberries, and strawberries. The formula also includes pea protein, quinoa, wolfberry, pumpkin seed protein, and alfalfa grass juice, making it not only a tasty protein shake but an excellent source of dietary fiber as well. Best Vanilla/Chocolate Protein Powder: Vega One 


I am a vanilla-loving lady. I rarely opt for chocolate-flavored anything unless the hormones are in full swing. It kind of kills me that YL hasn’t produced a vanilla whey-free powder yet, but maybe soon (70 new products are being released this June). Anyway, finding a vanilla-flavored protein shake that doesn’t taste like tooth decay and snot took a while, but I love Vega One’s French Vanilla. The chocolate is equally excellent if that’s your jam. With 20 grams of plant-based protein from peas and hemp, Vega One Vanilla is delicious with almond milk, orange juice, orange Vitality oil, and ice (Orange Vanilla Swirl!). I think my favorite part about this powder is it is chock-full with greens. Spinach, broccoli, kale, spirulina all make up this blend, and no, you can’t taste them.

Best Unflavored Protein Powder: PlantFusion


PlantFusion has been my go-to unflavored protein for 7 years. If you want a natural, unflavored, plant-based protein, this is your best bet. Their flavored versions are not great, so I stick with what they are best at. A serving provides 21 grams of protein, and PlantFusion has mastered the science of plant-based amino acids, so if you are building, this may be the shake for you. The protein comes from peas and quinoa primarily. As its unflavored, you can literally throw anything in here, but I recommend using some stevia or half a banana because it is not sweet at all. I’ve also found that shakes made with this powder need to be downed immediately after blending them up. If you let them sit in the fridge, the flavor changes and its not tasty.
